CYBERJAYA, March 31 (Bernama) -- The MCMC Nexus application developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) helps users test internet speed and assess network performance in their respective areas in real time, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
She said the application opens up a space for the public to contribute actual network performance data in their locations and MCMC and network providers automatically receive coverage performance status.
Teo said the data collected would be used to improve network quality and coverage in the future.
“More importantly, this application provides an opportunity for citizens to contribute data related to network quality in their respective areas.
“MCMC Nexus is not just an application, but rather an important driver of Malaysia’s digital future, including supporting the development of smart cities and the delivery of high-quality internet,” she said at the application launch ceremony at MCMC Tower, here today.
Also present were MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and members of the commission.
Teo said that although the application was introduced in stages, MCMC Nexus received an encouraging response with 51,415 downloads recorded since February 2025.
She said that as a result of active user involvement, a total of 168 million network quality data points were successfully collected nationwide and the information helped identify weak coverage areas and service quality issues more accurately.
According to Teo, the effectiveness of the system was also proven through the operation of the MCMC Nexus Network Monitoring Centre which monitored network stability during major events throughout 2025.
“These include the Maritime Exhibition and Langkawi International Aerospace 2025 (LIMA 2025), ASEAN Summit as well as National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.
“At the same time, this platform empowers businesses, expands access to digital education and fosters innovation across sectors,” he said.
In terms of security and user data protection, she said it remained a priority in the development of the application.
She said the MCMC Nexus application had undergone independent testing and was officially certified yesterday (March 30) by a laboratory accredited under the ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
Teo said the Personal Data Protection Department also confirmed that the application did not collect any Personally Identifiable Information and only recorded network performance indicators that were fully anonymised in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
The MCMC Nexus application can be downloaded for free via the Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Huawei AppGallery.
Meanwhile, Teo said as of Jan 31, 9.82 million premises nationwide now have fibre-optic broadband access, surpassing the original target of 9 million, while the country's median mobile broadband speed has reached 147.24 Mbps, far exceeding the target of 100 Mbps.
"In addition, Internet coverage in populated areas has reached 99.71 per cent with the 5G network also continuing to grow through Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) which recorded 82.4 per cent coverage, while U Mobile has reached 71.9 per cent.
