PM Anwar: Students Must Balance Knowledge With Moral Values And Conduct

KUALA KANGSAR, April 4 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that students must emphasise the development of proper conduct, morals and discipline alongside efforts to master knowledge in various fields.

He said this should not be overlooked as it forms the foundation for producing well-balanced students.

“It is not a new idea that mastering knowledge in various fields is important, but we must not abandon the foundation of nurturing individuals through good character and moral values,” he said while speaking at the ‘Temu Anwar’ programme with the community of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) at the Tun Abdul Razak Auditorium here today.

Also present were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, her deputy Wong Kah Woh, and Perak Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Khairudin Abu Hanipah.

Anwar said that in the Islamic intellectual tradition, the concept of knowledge is not merely about mastering facts, but involves a deeper understanding that leads to ‘ma’rifah’ (true comprehension).

“We are all competing to seek information. But not all information is knowledge.

“The filtering of knowledge requires effort on our part to evaluate and sift through information to enable us to attain ma’rifah. So there is a difference between information, knowledge and wisdom,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar, who received his education at MCKK for seven years from Form One to Upper Six (1960 to 1966), also witnessed the presentation of a mock cheque amounting to RM800,000 for upgrading works at the college’s Hargreaves Hall.
