PUTRAJAYA, April 6 (Bernama) -- The use of MyKad to obtain subsidies under the BUDI95 initiative is allowed, provided it complies with existing rules and laws, the National Registration Department (NRD) said.
NRD said it is responsible for ensuring MyKad, as the country’s official identification document, remains secure and is not misused.
It said under Regulation 25 of the National Registration Regulations 1990, the use or possession of a MyKad by anyone other than its rightful owner is an offence.
The department urged the public not to hand over their MyKad to others for any purpose, including transactions involving subsidised fuel, to avoid legal implications and identity misuse.
“NRD remains committed to ensuring that MyKad functions as a valid and trusted form of identification, including in supporting government initiatives such as BUDI95,” it said.
Meanwhile, NRD clarified that its director-general Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias’ earlier statement was related to an investigation into the misuse of four MyKad in Kelantan and was not intended to restrict access to government subsidies.
It also urged the public to refer to official sources and understand the context of issues before making interpretations, to ensure informed and responsible discourse.
