KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Translators Association (PPM) is stepping up efforts to uphold professional standards in the translation industry through its Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Course, amid rising demand for translation services in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) and globalisation.
The course is among the mandatory requirements for translator accreditation by the association.
PPM president Dr Hasuria Che Omar said the programme was designed to equip translators and interpreters with a clear understanding of ethical principles and professional conduct expected in the course of their duties.
Hasuria, who is also PPM course director, said participants would be guided on handling complex ethical issues and making sound professional decisions in their daily assignments.
“The course also seeks to enhance translators’ and interpreters’ awareness of their professional responsibilities to clients, colleagues, stakeholders, society and translation institutions,” she told Bernama.
She said the code of ethics emphasises several key principles, including ensuring accuracy and fidelity to the source text without altering meaning, safeguarding the confidentiality of client information and documents, and avoiding conflicts of interest that could compromise neutrality.
“In addition, professional integrity is also emphasised, including a prohibition on any form of fraud, manipulation of translated content and abuse of professional position,” she said.
The face-to-face course will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 8 am to 5 pm at Level 5, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) headquarters here.
It will be conducted by Bashir Basalamah, a translator and interpreter accredited by Australia’s National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI), with expertise in business, legal and technical fields.
Participation fees are set at RM225 for PPM members and RM250 for non-members.
Hasuria said organising the course reflected PPM’s continued commitment to strengthening the competency and professionalism of industry practitioners, while ensuring ethical standards in the profession are preserved.
