ALOR GAJAH, April 15 (Bernama) -- Entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector, particularly downstream product players, have been urged to optimise the use of modern technology to enhance productivity, quality and marketability of their produce.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the adoption of technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) not only modernises agricultural operations but also serves as a catalyst for the development of more competitive downstream products.
He said such technologies enable production processes to be carried out automatically without continuous monitoring, thereby improving efficiency, reducing labour costs and increasing output.
“In the agricultural sector, we find that new technologies introduced in the Gadek area can be further highlighted and modernised to expand the marketability of products,” reporters after a Ziarah Ikon Usahawan Gadek: Agrofarm Sahabat Gadek Enterprise activity in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat programme for Gadek state constituency here today.
He said in tilapia farming, the use of IoT combined with AI enables the control of feeding, water levels and pH levels to be carried out automatically without the need for close supervision.
Ab Rauf said the production of quality basic products through modern technology must be complemented by the development of downstream products to enhance value and competitiveness in the market.
“If this technology is properly promoted, it can produce goods that are better marketed, including in downstream sectors such as processing, packaging and branding,” he said..
He said the state government would continue to support entrepreneurs through guidance programmes and mentor-mentee initiatives to ensure they are able to adapt to technology and expand their businesses to a higher level.
“We will guide, educate and assist these entrepreneurs as best as possible so that the technology introduced can serve as a reference for the younger generation to venture into modern agriculture while strengthening the overall national agri-food ecosystem,” he added.
