Allowance For Form Six Students A Major Step Towards Educational Equity - GPMS

26/04/2026 07:30 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- The government’s proposal to provide allowances to Form Six students marks a significant paradigm shift and a pragmatic step towards advancing educational equity in Malaysia.

Welcoming the move, Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) secretary-general Wafiyuddin Musa said the initiative represents more than just financial assistance.

It is also an official recognition of Form Six as a prestigious, competitive and high-quality pathway to higher education, he said.

He said aligning incentives for Form Six students with those offered under the Matriculation Programme could help eliminate the long-standing perception of the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) route as a “second choice”.

“With equal financial support, the standing of STPM will be elevated as a premier and highly competitive pathway. This will encourage more students to choose the stream confidently as their first option,” he said in a statement today.

From a socio-economic perspective, Wafiyuddin described the proposed allowance as a strategic investment in human capital, while also serving as an essential social safety net.

He said the initiative would help ease the financial burden on families, particularly those in the B40 and M40 income groups, who are grappling with rising living costs. The assistance would also help students meet essential needs such as purchasing reference materials, covering transportation costs and managing daily expenses.

“As a result, students will be able to focus fully on academic excellence without the added pressure of financial constraints,” he said.

However, GPMS urged the government to ensure that the application process is inclusive, user-friendly and easily accessible, especially for students in rural areas.

It also called for aid distribution to be streamlined and free from unnecessary bureaucracy so that assistance reaches recipients promptly.

Wafiyuddin further recommended that the government leverage existing databases to automate eligibility assessments, thereby reducing the need for students to submit physical documents.

“GPMS is optimistic that continued efforts to strengthen student welfare will lead to holistic improvements in the nation’s academic quality and standards. We hope this proposal will be implemented soon for the benefit of a fairer, more competitive and globally capable generation of human capital,” he said.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Minister of Finance, said the government was looking into providing allowances to Form Six students, similar to those enjoyed by Matriculation Programme students.

He said the proposal is in line with the restructuring of pre-university education, following the transfer of Form Six administration from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Higher Education.
