Selangor JKR Identifies 102 Schools For New Classroom Construction

05/05/2026 04:22 PM

SHAH ALAM, May 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 102 schools across Selangor have been identified for the construction of new classrooms in preparation for the expected increase in Year One student enrolment for the next academic session.

Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) director Shukri Ishak said the move is aimed at addressing overcrowding in schools while ensuring a more conducive and comfortable learning environment for students.

“For programmes under the Ministry of Education (MOE) involving preparations for next year’s student intake, state JKR has received allocations covering 102 schools, and to date, we have issued 41 tender notices.

“We are targeting for all additional classrooms in high-density schools to be fully completed before the end of this year to ensure that the mandate given by the MOE is carried out according to schedule,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after attending the opening ceremony of the Selangor JKR headquarters complex in Section 17, which was officiated by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, here today.

Earlier, the complex, built at a cost of RM36 million, has been recognised as a new landmark of the state government in strengthening the delivery of public infrastructure, and is equipped with facilities such as a computer laboratory and a solar-covered parking area.

According to Shukri, the department emphasises the use of solar energy to reduce carbon footprint and annual operating costs, including at the new complex.

“The use of solar technology at the complex’s covered parking area has generated significant savings. In 2025, we recorded a reduction in utility bills of RM128,000.

“With an allocation of RM1.37 million from the Ministry of Economy for this system, we are able to save about 45 per cent of the department’s monthly electricity bill, which was previously one of the main cost burdens,” he said.

As such, the department plans to expand the installation of solar panels to four more district offices this year, out of a total of nine offices, a move expected to generate savings of up to RM500,000 annually in electricity costs for the branches.

Meanwhile, Shukri said that overall, the department is currently managing 101 development projects worth RM2.69 billion, comprising 70 federal projects and 31 state government projects.
