GEORGE TOWN, May 7 (Bernama) -- The Juru-Sungai Dua Traffic Dispersal Project (PTJSD) near here is progressing steadily, with preliminary works for Package 1 completed, while utility relocation, geotechnical and other related works are actively underway at the project site.
In a statement today, PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) said Package 1 involves the upgrading of the roundabout at the East-West Interchange (KM135.15 to KM135.4) and the construction of a new flyover along Jalan Tun Hussein Onn (KM133.5 to KM134.5).
As of mid-April, early-stage works carried out under the project included topography surveys, utility mapping, soil investigations, assessments of existing structures and exploratory works.
“The achievement reflects the commitment of all parties involved in ensuring the project implementation remains on a strong footing,” the statement said.
PLUS said utility relocation works have reached about 55 per cent completion through close coordination between the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), PLUS and key utility agencies, including Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) and TIME dotCom Berhad.
Geotechnical works are also ongoing at several locations, involving the installation of prefabricated vertical drains and surcharge systems, piling embankments, preliminary test piles, preparation of the Traffic Management Plan (TMP), as well as drainage diversion works to facilitate the next phase of construction.
According to PLUS, the PTJSD is a high-impact project aimed at providing sustainable infrastructure and easing congestion along the Juru-Sungai Dua corridor, one of the busiest stretches of the North-South Expressway.
The 17.3-kilometre project spans three major districts - South Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and North Seberang Perai, and is expected to benefit about 200,000 motorists using the route daily.
The RM3 billion project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, with 30 per cent of vehicles projected to shift to the new direct Juru-Sungai Dua route, cutting travel time during peak hours from one hour to just 20 minutes.
