KANGAR, May 10 (Bernama) -- The KomaLaut Mangrove Forest site in Kuala Perlis near here should be considered for gazettement as a Permanent Reserved Forest to ensure the continuity of conservation efforts and safeguard the sustainability of the area in the future.
The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail said the move was crucial to ensure the mangrove forest area continues to be preserved in a more systematic manner and protected from any development threats that could affect its ecosystem.
“The KomaLaut Mangrove Forest site in Kuala Perlis has been approved by the state authorities as a mangrove forest area managed by the Perlis Forestry Department since 2018,” he said when officiating a mangrove tree-planting project in conjunction with International Forest Day 2026 at KomaLaut today.
He said the tree-planting project was not merely a symbolic programme but a long-term investment for the survival of the ecosystem, community well-being and natural heritage to be enjoyed by future generations.
“The mangrove replanting effort carried out today is a highly appropriate and significant step, in line with the sustainable development agenda at the global level, particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, namely Life Below Water, as well as the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) initiative under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability,” he said.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said this initiative reflects a continuous commitment in addressing the challenges of climate change while ensuring natural ecosystems are preserved for future generations and would need the involvement and close cooperation of various parties to be successful.
At the same time, he said the parties responsible must ensure that every mangrove tree planted is properly maintained and continuously monitored so that the outcomes and benefits of the programme can be seen in the long term.
According to him, planting alone without consistent preservation and maintenance efforts would make it difficult to achieve the programme’s original objectives.
“I would like to extend my highest congratulations and appreciation to all parties involved, namely the APPGM-SDG (under the Malaysian Parliament), the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (Perlis), Malaysia International Culture Exchange Club, Malaysian Youth Council, Perlis Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Perlis CCCI) as well as all parties who contributed to the success of this programme,” he added.
