KLUANG, May 18 (Bernama) -- The fourth phase of the Bantuan Kasih Johor (BKJ) initiative for senior citizens has brought a sense of relief to the elderly in the state, helping them navigate their later years amid limited fixed incomes and rising living costs.
Checks at the aid distribution site for the Machap state constituency at the General Operations Force (GOF) parade square in Simpang Renggam on Saturday found that most recipients were accompanied by family members, with some arriving in wheelchairs.
For Taman Perkasa resident Baharudin Abdul Karim, 61, who is wheelchair-bound after suffering a stroke, the assistance was described as a much-needed and meaningful “bonus”.
“I plan to share this blessing by treating my wife and family to a meal, as they’ve been a great support in taking care of me since I lost the ability to walk,” he told Bernama, visibly emotional.
Chong Fatt Ting, 95, also attended the aid distribution, accompanied by her grandchild.
Despite her frailty, the Kampung Baru Machap resident was determined not to miss the chance to receive the aid, which was personally handed over by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who is also the constituency’s elected representative.
Chong said she plans to share the assistance she received with her family and neighbours as a gesture of appreciation for their support in looking after her over the years.
Meanwhile, S. Amutha, 65, from Taman Titiwangsa, said the rising cost of living has made the cash aid even more significant for her and her family.
“I am grateful and hope the initiative will continue, as many people, including senior citizens, are affected by the current economic situation,” said the mother of one.
Chu Minitan Kasimun, 69, from Kampung Tengah, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, said the assistance helps ease her daily expenses, including groceries and basic medication.
“Although my children do help, this assistance is very important as it helps me top up essentials like rice, cooking oil and eggs, as well as my healthcare needs,” she added.
Onn Hafiz presented RM200 in cash to 7,097 recipients in the Machap state constituency under the fourth phase of the BKJ.
The Machap assemblyman said the state government has allocated RM61.4 million for the programme, benefiting 307,000 senior citizens in recognition of their contributions across Johor.
“Insya-Allah, if the state’s revenue continues to grow, we will extend assistance to other target groups so that this prosperity can be shared more inclusively with all segments of society, regardless of race,” he said.
At the same event, Onn Hafiz announced plans to hold a special Jualan Kasih Johor (JKJ) sale initiative for GOF personnel and staff of Simpang Renggam Prison in the near future.
