KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- The plight of a teacher who suffered a haemorrhagic stroke has drawn the attention of Bandar Tun Razak Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who visited the educator under the Ziarah Cakna programme in conjunction with Teachers’ Day today.
The Prime Minister’s wife also presented a cash contribution from the Bandar Tun Razak Parliamentary Office and the Bangsar/Pudu District Education Office to help ease the burden of medical expenses borne by the teacher, Norlaili Muhammad.
Norlaili, a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Tasik Selatan, has been receiving treatment at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital after suffering a haemorrhagic stroke in August last year and has been on leave from teaching duties since then.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Dr Wan Azizah, who previously served as a doctor in the government sector for 14 years, emphasised the importance of rehabilitation as a key factor in helping stroke patients regain independence.
Meanwhile, she also expressed appreciation to all nurses for their service and sacrifices in conjunction with Nurses’ Day, which is also observed this month.
“Nurses are also like teachers. For example, at this rehabilitation hospital, they play a teaching role in helping patients recover,” she said.
Meanwhile, Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital director Dr Faizul Nizam Abu Salim said Norlaili, who is in the early stage of recovery, has begun to show positive progress, including being able to stand and use a wheelchair.
He said that Norlaili had previously undergone a tracheostomy (a surgical procedure to create an opening in the neck) to assist with breathing while in the intensive care unit (ICU) at another hospital.
“Patients will undergo treatment with physiotherapists and occupational therapists. She is also scheduled to undergo assessment and speech retraining with a speech therapist once the tracheostomy opening has fully closed, enabling her to speak again,” he said.
