LABUAN, May 18 (Bernama) -- The Labuan Member of Parliament’s office has channelled nearly RM300,000 to carry out urgent repair works on 33 houses damaged by the tornado-like storm that struck the MPL Housing area near Kampung Tanjung Aru on May 12.
Labuan MP Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman said the repair works were carried out immediately after the incident to ensure the affected families could return to their homes as soon as possible.
He said the swift action was part of efforts to provide an efficient and practical response to residents whose houses were damaged, particularly those with roofs blown off and household structures affected by the strong winds.
“We are making every effort to be as efficient as possible in responding swiftly to the needs of the affected residents.
“The repair works began immediately after the incident, and we expect them to be completed by this week so that the residents and their families can return home,” he told Bernama today.
Suhaili said the assistance was aimed at easing the burden of the affected families, many of whom had to seek temporary shelter with relatives after their homes were damaged during the incident.
He said the MP’s office had also given homeowners the flexibility to appoint their own contractors or allow the repair works to be arranged through the MP’s office.
“This approach is to ensure that the repairs can be carried out quickly and according to the needs of each affected household,” he said.
One of the affected homeowners, Mohd Azahar Aziz, 36, said the assistance from the MP’s office had brought much relief to residents who were still recovering from the impact of the storm.
He said Suhaili had been supportive and helpful in addressing the plight of the affected residents.
“The service has been very efficient, and the repair works were done swiftly…we expect to return home this week,” he said.
The tornado-like storm, which occurred at about 9.40 pm on May 12, damaged 33 houses at the MPL Housing area, with several roofs blown away, vehicles damaged by falling objects and trees uprooted in nearby areas.
The incident also caused a power disruption in the area, while several affected residents were forced to leave their homes and stay temporarily with relatives.
