PUTRAJAYA, May 19 (Bernama) -- The government is hopeful that the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, aimed at limiting the prime minister's tenure, will receive support from opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) when it is re-tabled in the Dewan Rakyat this June.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the bill requires support from the opposition bloc, as a two-thirds majority is needed to pass a constitutional amendment.
"I think what is more important is for MPs to understand that limiting the prime minister's tenure of service is viewed by the government bloc as something beneficial for the nation and good for the people.
"I hope the opposition will also see it this way. Because this is not about extending power, it is about limiting power," she told reporters after attending the Prime Minister's Department Law and Institutional Reform Cluster's Excellent Service and Long Service Awards ceremony here today.
She said no changes have been made to the bill's content, and its re-tabling is to secure the required two-thirds majority support.
The proposed 10-year term limit is part of the institutional reform agenda initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In another development, Azalina said the ministry will launch the Anti-Bullying Tribunal, including dedicated court facilities and a hotline, on June 16.
