MELAKA, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will continue strengthening advocacy and support efforts for women, including victims of domestic violence and sexual crimes, through awareness and counselling programmes.
Its deputy minister Lim Hui Ying said prevention remains the ministry’s priority, while immediate assistance for victims is also emphasised.
“Among the assistance provided are counselling services, guidance on further action and support for women facing such situations.
“When a case occurs, we must be at the forefront in providing the necessary help, including counselling and assistance to victims,” she told reporters after joining a Ziarah Kasih programme held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme for the Kota Laksamana state constituency at Kampung Tujuh, Tengkera, here today.
Lim said the Department of Women Development continues to organise advocacy programmes to raise public awareness on issues involving women and family institutions.
Among the latest initiatives introduced is the PRISMAnita programme launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to assist single mothers, particularly after divorce.
She said the programme provides awareness on women’s rights while helping participants manage their finances and rebuild their lives.
Meanwhile, Lim said close cooperation between the state and Federal governments through programmes such as WRUR helps widen assistance networks for those in need, including families facing rising living costs.
“We cannot work in isolation as both the state and Federal governments have different resources and roles. By working together, we can provide more effective assistance to those in need,” she said.
“This programme is meaningful and close to the people because it reaches out directly to families genuinely in need,” she said.
She also called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private companies to work together with the government in addressing social and community welfare issues.
