KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- Slovenia is preparing to host the 2026 UEC Road European Championships from Oct 2 to 7, marking the country’s largest cycling event to date.

Union Européenne de Cyclisme President, Enrico Della Casa said Slovenia was selected as host amid what he described as a “golden age of cycling” in the country.

“The exceptional results achieved in recent years and the development of new generations confirm the strength and vision of a system capable of developing both top-level athletes and young talents.

“We are convinced that the championships will deliver races of the highest technical standard and outstanding sporting moments,” he said.

The championships will feature 800 cyclists from more than 50 countries competing in 14 races across several Slovenian towns, including Ljubljana, Kranj and Kamnik, according to a statement.

Organisers expect about 300,000 spectators along the race routes and more than 16.5 million television and digital viewers during the six-day event.

Slovenian riders including Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič and Urška Žigart are expected to compete on home roads.

The Slovenian Tourist Board is supporting the event through promotional and tourism campaigns for international visitors.
