SHAH ALAM, May 22 (Bernama) -- KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital (KPJ Selangor) has successfully performed the first HOBBIT Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Cement Screw procedure in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.
The milestone, which was achieved under the KPJ Health System (KPJHS), marked a significant advancement in complex spinal care for the hospital, a member of the KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ Healthcare).
KPJ Healthcare, in a statement, said the procedure involved the use of HOBBIT MIS cement screws, an advanced spinal fixation technology designed to support greater surgical precision and stability in complex spinal procedures.
“As a minimally invasive approach, the procedure is designed to reduce tissue disruption and support faster post-operative recovery compared to conventional open spine surgery, which typically involves larger incisions and longer rehabilitation periods,” it said.
According to the statement, the procedure was led by KPJ Selangor’s consultant orthopaedic (spine) surgeons Dr Shaharuddin Abdul Rhani and Dr Jamal Azmi Mohamad, together with the hospital’s multidisciplinary surgical team.
Commenting on the milestone, KPJ Healthcare President and Managing Director Chin Keat Chyuan said the achievement reflected the growing depth of subspecialty expertise across the KPJ Health System and their continued focus on advancing complex care capabilities within the hospitals.
“Being the first in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region to perform this procedure reinforces our commitment to strengthening minimally invasive surgical capabilities that support more precise surgical care, better recovery and improved patient experience.
“Guided by our Care for Life purpose, we remain focused on applying innovation meaningfully to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Jamal Azmi, who also serves as the Medical Director at KPJ Selangor, noted that the achievement reflected the collective expertise and coordination of their multidisciplinary teams in delivering complex spinal procedures safely and effectively.
"We remain committed to advancing spine care through evidence-based practices, continuous learning and treatment approaches that prioritise patient safety, recovery and long-term outcomes," he said.
Dr Shaharuddin highlighted that minimally invasive spine surgery has evolved rapidly, with technologies like the HOBBIT MIS Cement Screw system allowing surgeons to perform complex tasks with greater precision while minimising the surgical impact on patients.
“These approaches can support faster recovery, lower post-operative discomfort and earlier rehabilitation, which are important aspects of modern spine care,” he said.
According to the statement, the milestone is part of KPJ Healthcare’s broader efforts to enhance its connected healthcare ecosystem by integrating multidisciplinary expertise and clinical standards across its network through Practice, Education, Research, and Innovation.
