JOHOR BAHRU, May 29 (Bernama) -- Residents intending to perform qurban (sacrificial) rituals, particularly on a private basis, are advised to report the activity to their village heads beforehand to ensure compliance with the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Ulu Tiram Village Head Shazrul Idham Abd Aziz made the reminder after a 45-year-old man was fatally gored by a buffalo during a qurban ritual in Kampung Tenang, Ulu Tiram, last Wednesday, which he said occurred without his knowledge as the activity had not been reported to the village authorities.
He said apart from the fatality, another similar incident occurred about five kilometres away in Batu 19, Kampung Sungai Tiram, leaving a man with three broken ribs, although the area is not under his jurisdiction.
"I only learned about the buffalo-goring incident (at Kampung Sungai Tiram) after watching the viral video. Initially, I thought it had happened in my village, but it was actually in another area.
"At the same time, another incident occurred within my area which was even more tragic as it resulted in a fatality," he told reporters when met at Kampung Tenang here today.
Shazrul Idham said he oversees three villages in Ulu Tiram, namely Kampung Banjar, Kampung Tenang and Kampung Tiram, and the incident that claimed the man's life had also left another individual with a broken arm.
He said all qurban activities reported to the village authorities would be referred to the Mosque and Surau Mobilisation Committee of the respective state constituency for permit applications.
According to him, the measure would help to ensure that qurban rituals are conducted in accordance with established guidelines while reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
In the Kampung Tenang incident, Ahmad Shah Meerasa, 45, was pronounced dead at 11 pm at Sultanah Aminah Hospital due to vascular injuries to his left leg after being gored by a buffalo and police classified the case as a sudden death.
The victim's nephew was reported as saying that the victim managed to walk on his own towards a four-wheel-drive vehicle at the scene before collapsing after being gored by the buffalo.
