KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- Members of the Cabinet have extended Wesak Day greetings to Buddhists, emphasising unity, tolerance and mutual respect in Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia’s diversity of religions, cultures and traditions, which forms part of everyday life, continues to reflect the country’s long-standing spirit of harmony and mutual respect.
“This uniqueness shapes our national identity and is one of Malaysia’s strengths and attractions in the eyes of the world. May this year’s Wesak Day celebrations bring happiness and joy to all those observing it,” he said in a Facebook post.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has called on Malaysians to strengthen further unity in diversity, which he said is central to the country’s identity and a key driver of national progress.
“With strong unity, we are better able to face any challenge, including the current global energy crisis and supply disruptions affecting countries around the world. A spirit of togetherness and tolerance will be essential in keeping the country strong, resilient and prosperous,” he said.
Meanwhile, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said kindness, wisdom and compassion should continue to be nurtured to preserve the country’s long-standing harmony.
“We should remind one another of the importance of living with respect, doing good to others, and strengthening unity and a sense of togetherness in society,” he said.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek wished that this year’s Wesak Day celebrations bring peace and happiness to all who observe them.
“(Let’s) continue to strengthen unity, harmony, tolerance and mutual respect among Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-faith society,” she said.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Arthur Kurup said the value of moderation often associated with Wesak Day is in line with efforts to preserve the environment.
“As Buddhist teachings emphasise respect for all living beings, let us renew our commitment to caring for the Earth for the sake of future generations. May the light of Wesak bring peace, happiness and inspiration as we continue to protect our priceless natural heritage,” he said.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Wesak Day not only reflects the richness of Malaysia’s cultural heritage, but also serves as a bridge that strengthens understanding, respect and unity among Malaysians.
“May this year’s Wesak Day celebrations bring peace, happiness and well-being to all those observing it, while further strengthening the unity and harmony that underpin the nation’s strength,” he said.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad said the values of compassion, love and tolerance associated with Wesak Day correspond with the Malaysia MADANI vision of building a harmonious, multi-ethnic society.
“As we give thanks for the country’s security, I would like to remind everyone to take care of their spiritual well-being and mental peace, as emotional well-being is central to overall holistic health,” he said.
Also extending greetings on social media were Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
