BUTTERWORTH, June 2 (Bernama) -- Sunway Medical Centre Penang has strengthened its position as a leading destination for orthopaedic and spine care in Northern Malaysia with the opening of its Advanced Orthopaedic and Spine Centre.
Chief executive officer Christine Lee Chwee Ngoh said the new facility reflects the hospital’s commitment to bringing specialised treatment and healthcare innovation closer to communities in Penang and the northern region.
“This marks another important step in strengthening our role as a destination for advanced orthopaedic and spine care in Northern Malaysia.
“We are honoured to support the Penang2030 vision by bringing quality healthcare innovation and compassionate care closer to the community,” she said during the launch ceremony today.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow officiated the launch. Also present were Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long and managing director (hospital and healthcare operations) Dr Khoo Chow Huat.
Lee said patients can now access a comprehensive range of orthopaedic and spine-related services at one location, including specialised spine care, robotic-assisted joint replacement procedures, trauma management, rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
She added that the centre’s focus extends beyond medical procedures and technology.
“Every recovery journey is about helping patients regain mobility, return to work and spend meaningful time with their loved ones,” she said.
Meanwhile, Chow said the opening of the centre reflects a broader commitment to helping people lead healthier, more active and productive lives.
He noted that back pain, joint problems and other musculoskeletal conditions could affect mobility, productivity and overall quality of life, especially as many occupations today place strain on the body.
“Facilities such as the Advanced Orthopaedic and Spine Centre play an important role in helping people remain active, independent and able to continue contributing to society,” he said.
Chow also welcomed the centre’s integrated approach, which combines specialised treatment, rehabilitation services and advanced medical technology under one roof.
At the same time, he urged healthcare providers to continue enhancing medical expertise and technology while ensuring healthcare remains accessible and affordable.
