Essential Goods Supply Remains Stable Despite Global Uncertainties - Mydin

06/06/2026 10:09 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The supply of essential goods in Malaysia remains stable despite ongoing uncertainties in global supply chains, says Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin) managing director Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin.

He said careful planning by the retail sector and the smooth operation of the domestic agricultural industry have strengthened confidence that food supplies for the local market remain secure.

Ameer Ali said uninterrupted planting and harvesting activities, supported by sufficient agricultural inputs such as fertilisers, have helped maintain market stability, with no signs of shortages in the near future.

“At the moment, there are no indications of that. Planting and harvesting activities are proceeding as usual, while fertiliser supplies remain sufficient.

“We have also heard Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu say that urea fertiliser supplies are adequate for the current planting season,” he said when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme titled ‘Strengthening the Retail Industry, Driving the National Economy’, here last night.

On imported goods, Ameer Ali said local retailers have adopted forward-buying strategies to ensure a consistent and adequate supply of essential imported products.

He also urged consumers not to resort to panic buying, noting that supply stability extends beyond food items to include products such as textiles and clothing.

“I can say that supplies remain stable and adequate. There is no need to worry excessively, but at the same time, people should avoid waste and unnecessary panic,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ameer Ali welcomed the sizeable allocation for the Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) and Rahmah Basic Aid (SARA) programmes under Budget 2026, describing the initiative as having a multiplier effect on the domestic economy.

“Traders are also grateful because consumers’ spending power is currently rather weak. When assistance such as this is provided, shops become busier and it creates a significant positive impact on the economy, especially for small businesses,” he said.

In a separate development, Mydin is adapting to changing consumer lifestyles by opening more than 20 new outlets this year under a smaller community-store concept, offering a complete range of essential goods.
