Perak Govt To Step Up Monitoring of Rohingya Activities -- MB

11/06/2026 09:00 PM

IPOH, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Perak government will continue to monitor any activities involving the Rohingya ethnic community in the state to ensure public safety and order are always maintained.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the monitoring, conducted in cooperation with the relevant authorities, following information received from the National Security Council (MKN) indicating that a small number of individuals from the community have built facilities such as houses and schools.

“Most of the Rohingya community are in Manjung and many of them wear badges issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Malaysia. We are not certain of their authenticity,” he told reporters after officiating the Perak-Level Falak Month Launch Ceremony for 1448H/2026 here today.

He said the state government had yet to get accurate figures on the number of Rohingya in Perak and several preliminary findings are being examined to obtain a clearer picture of the situation.

“We are concerned because their numbers are said to be large. When their numbers are larger, they may feel stronger.

“Although we have not heard of any major problems involving them so far, we will take appropriate action if anything undesirable occurs,” he said.

According to data available on the UNHCR website, 193,824 Rohingya were registered as refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia as of February this year.
