KUALA TERENGGANU, June 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has denied claims that a viral photograph showing a group of Rohingya unloading fish was taken in the vicinity of Pulau Kambing near here.
Its chairman, Muhammad Faiz Fadzil, said LKIM immediately directed its Terengganu enforcement team to conduct inspections and monitoring in the area following the circulation of the image.
However, investigations found no fish unloading activity at the location as alleged.
“Following a viral social media post, LKIM ordered an investigation around Pulau Kambing as the LKIM Complex is located within the area.
“Based on the inspections and investigations carried out, no fish unloading activity involving Rohingya foreigners was found at the LKIM Complex or its surrounding areas. LKIM therefore wishes to clarify that the viral photograph was not taken at Pulau Kambing LKIM,” he said in a statement today.
Muhammad Faiz said LKIM views the spread of unverified information seriously as it could affect the agency’s reputation and disrupt public order.
He said LKIM remains committed to ensuring compliance with all regulations, laws and standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing fish landing complexes.
“LKIM will not compromise and will take firm action against any management personnel or parties found to have violated the law,” he said.
