KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the people not to be influenced by political campaigns that divide society based on race.
He said too many political campaigns currently focus on racial sentiments, while the real issues that need attention are the welfare and future of the people as well as human values in the country's administration.
"Power is not a matter of political rhetoric or election manifestos. It is a matter of heart, soul, kindness, compassion and justice. That is what Malaysia needs.
"Unfortunately, too many political campaigns today revolve around race, supposedly the Malays will lose their rights, the Chinese will take over or Indians will gain certain advantages. They rarely talk about the rights of ordinary people who live in hardship,” he said.
The Prime Minister said this when speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the development of permanent houses for residents of Bukit Kiara Longhouse here, today.
Anwar said within the framework of the MANDANI Malaysia, issues of humanity, kindness and compassion are always a priority in every policy, action and decision of the government to ensure the well-being of the people.
He said the principle also requires the government to be fair to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected regardless of background, race or religion.
“We can defend Bahasa Melayu as the national language, protect the rights of Muslims and at the same time protect the rights of other communities.
“… The rights of one party do not necessarily deny the rights of the other. This country is majority Malay and Muslim, but the rights of all citizens must continue to be protected,” he said.
