ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The state government will provide a number of allocations under the 2023 Johor Budget, to address the problem of flash floods, especially at the flood-prone areas in this city.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the allocations would be used to maintain and upgrade the flood hotspots which have been identified by the local authorities (PBT).

"Drains and roads with potholes will be repaired and upgraded while the drainage system will be improved to allow flash floods to recede faster when it rains heavily," he told a press conference after the handover of letters of appointment to the government chief whip, council members and local authority foundation heads, here today.

Meanwhile, Mohd Jafni expressed hope that the newly appointed chief whip and PBT councilors would take their responsibilities seriously in serving the people.

"I am aware they have to shoulder a lot of responsibilities and need to be devoted to public service obligation but as reminded by the Johor Menteri Besar, when you make it easy for others, Allah will facilitate your affairs,” he added.

On Aug 2, flash floods hit several areas in the city following heavy rains, causing standstill traffic and over 500 vehicles were partially submerged in the flood waters.

After observing the flood-affected areas, MB Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the government would look at appropriate measures to overcome flash floods in the city.
