Floods: Number of victims drop in Johor, Sabah; slight increase in Pahang

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The number of flood victims in Johor and Sabah dropped slightly compared with the afternoon figure whereas Pahang saw an increase with 219 evacuees housed at temporary flood relief centres as of 8pm tonight.

In JOHOR, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in a statement said 2,564 victims from 718 families were taking shelter in six districts compared with 2,660 people from 743 families as at 2 pm.

According to the statement, a total of 31 relief centres were currently operating and this included a new relief centre in Batu Pahat.

Mersing recorded the highest number of evacuees with 839 people, followed by Batu Pahat (774), Kluang (422), Kota Tinggi (422), Segamat (92) and Tangkak (15).

Meanwhile, it was reported to be raining in Mersing and Kota Tinggi but good weather conditions prevailed in Batu Pahat, Kluang, Segamat and Tangkak.

In the meantime, the Sungai Endau in Mersing has surpassed the danger level with a reading of  2.79 metres.

In SABAH,  the number of flood evacuees dropped to 1,419 from 585 families who are sheltered at five relief centres as of tonight, compared with 1,637 people from 642 families this evening,

The Sabah JPBN Secretariat in a statement said in Paitan, two relief centres, namely Dewan Kampung Kubambangan and Dewan Kampung Sungai-Sungai have been closed.

The statement also said in Pitas, 1,363 victims from 565 families have been moved to four relief centres, followed by 43 victims from 11 families to one relief centre in Lahad Datu, and 13 victims from nine families moved to a relief centre in Paitan.

In PAHANG, the number of flood victims in Rompin showed a slight increase tonight after 219 victims from 70 families moved to three relief centres compared to 200 victims from 63 families earlier this evening.

The JPBN Secretariat said the Kampung Setajam relief centre is housing 171 victims whereas Kampung Denai (27 people) and Balai Raya Kampung Jawa (21 victims).

The level at Sungai Keratong in Rompin registered a lower reading but remains above the danger level.
