PUTRAJAYA, Dec 5 – The inaugural Workshops of the World Communicate (WOWComm) 2019: Communication & Sustainability Conference has been deemed a success by its organising chairman, Anne Edwards.
"Support for the conference was overwhelming with 200 participants -- including politicians, communication practitioners and those from academia -- attending,” she said of the one-day event aimed at strengthening communication on environmental issues.
Former Bernama chief executive officer, Datuk Yong Soo Heong, who was part of the Pushing Environment Beyond The Media panel, said awareness on the environment is increasing, but it is still not enough.
“There is a need to do more through the media, and people who care about the environment must spread the word,” he said.
Another panellist, Malay Mail editor-in-chief, Datuk Wong Sai Wan, said programmes on sustainability are not very “sexy”, and using TV and radio could be costly.
“Getting the message across involves budget. Therefore, you must pick your audience, pick your platform and go beyond traditional media,” he said.
True to its message, WOWComm‘19 was a zero-waste event, so plastic drinking bottles were avoided and information was conveyed via softcopy.
