KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak claimed that Saudi Arabia will be taken by surprise following Malaysia’s move to end the operations of the King Salman Centre for International Peace (KSCIP).
Najib said the KSCIP was the brainchild of Saudi King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud and that the Malaysian government when he was prime minister welcomed the setting up of the centre as it was deemed to be good for both countries.
"They (Saudis) chose Malaysia compared to many other countries, so we are rejecting assistance from the Saudi government which has very close relations with Malaysia,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
Yesterday, the Defence Ministry in a written reply to Kasthuri Patto (PH-Batu Kawan) in the Dewan Rakyat announced that the government has stopped the operations of KSCIP and that its temporary office in Jalan Ampang here was also asked to close with immediate effect.
The ministry said the functions of KSCIP would be absorbed by the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security which comes under the Defence Ministry.
