KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9  -- Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye is 73 years old, but his passion to serve the nation has not fade away.

After being with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for 27 years, he has formed the Alliance of Safety Community (Ikatan), a non-governmental organisation that focuses on educating the community, regardless of race and religion, on the importance of safety and health.

“I have been serving the community since the age of 24. For 27 years I was with NIOSH. I started as a board member and retired as the chairman last September.

“To continue to serve the community, I need a platform. There are many NGOs related to security,  but the scope of the IKATAN has been modified to cover various areas, encompassing residents, employees, students and all levels of the society,” he told Bernama TV in an exclusive interview here today.

Lee, who received the 2019 Maulidur Rasul Award today, said IKATAN, which was established in January, has 25 members, including him as the chairman and experts in various fields, including safety, health, environment, crime and ergonomics.

IKATAN will be a consultative body that provides consultation and advice to all sectors of society, he said, adding that IKATAN be officially launched on Nov 17.
