Floods Hit Beaufort In Sabah, Number Of Evacuees Drop In Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The Beaufort district in Sabah is the latest area to be affected by floods, while the number of evacuees in Sarawak continues to decline as of 4 pm today.

In SABAH, Beaufort district officer Mohd Nazri Ajun, who is also District Disaster Management Committee chairman, confirmed that the district was impacted by floods this afternoon, joining Keningau and Kinabatangan.

“A temporary relief centre (PPS) has been opened in Selagon. Residents were relocated after their homes were inundated and deemed unsafe. The relocation data will be updated,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat reported a slight increase in the number of flood victims to 322 people from 82 families, compared to 319 people from 81 families at 8 am.

A total of 69 people from 17 families were relocated to a PPS in Keningau, while 253 victims (65 families) sought refuge in two PPS in Kinabatangan.

In SARAWAK, the number of flood victims declined to 4,520 people from 5,384 this morning, with 26 PPS still operational, according to the JPBN Secretariat.

As of 4 pm, 1,593 victims were still housed in five PPS in Bintulu, down from 1,864 reported earlier, while the number of victims in the Miri Division decreased to 1,129 from 1,184.

The Sibu Division saw a slight increase in the number of victims to 1,157, compared to 1,142 in the morning, while the number of victims in the Mukah Division remained unchanged at 528.

The number of evacuees in the Samarahan Division decreased to 106 from 149, while the number in the Sarikei Division increased to 13.

Meanwhile, JOHOR has fully recovered from the floods. The last three PPS in the state have been closed, and 372 people from 106 families have been allowed to return to their homes.

JPBN chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said that the three PPS were Dewan Muafakat Taman Desaru Utama, Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas and Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Penawar.
