KUCHING, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has suggested that Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) conduct a study on the terubok fish habitat in Sungai Batang Lupar.

He added that SFC had new technology such as gadgets and equipment to study the seafloor that could be used to obtain data on the fish’s habitat and how it develops in the river.

“Previously we did a terubok fish study in Pulau Seduku, the research centre with assistance from New Zealand, but till today there’s no outcome.

“So with this technology, we can find ways to breed terubok as terubok in Batang Lupar is different from those in Batang Lassa,” he said after officiating Wisma Lestari SFC here today.

In other developments, he said that Kota Sentosa will be gazetted as a nature reserve and become a place to conduct research.

“Here there is a forensics lab, so I was briefed by the SFC chief executive officer Abang Arabi Abang Aimran about a very valuable leaf.

“One leaf can be valued at USD 320 and it can be developed as a new crop. So this is a heritage in Sarawak that has to be preserved. SFC will be responsible for protecting and researching it,” he said without elaborating what species the leaf was.
