Olympian Syaqiera Overcomes Challenges To Earn UPM Degree

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Balancing the responsibilities of representing Malaysia in archery at the Paris 2024 Olympics and completing her Bachelor of Communication (Hons) at Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication was no easy feat for Syaqiera Mashayikh.

However, with determination and perseverance, the 24-year-old can now celebrate her success as she graduates with a degree.

“Being a national athlete while completing my final year project (FYP) was very challenging as I faced pressure from both archery training and academic demands.

“Nevertheless, I didn’t want to neglect my studies for sports, as that goes against my principles. If I start something, I want to finish it properly,” she said in a statement issued by UPM today.

The Segamat, Johor native said she overcame the challenges with support from her family, friends, UPM, and her coach, who helped her balance archery training with her studies and encouraged her to attend classes.

“My family and friends were incredibly supportive, especially during my final year, knowing how difficult it was to manage Olympic training alongside meeting FYP deadlines.

“I am also grateful to my lecturers for their understanding of my training schedule and their willingness to assist me whenever needed,” she added.

Syaqiera advised fellow athletes pursuing their studies while training to never give up, as the knowledge and experience gained will ensure a brighter future.
