SINGAPORE, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Singaporean authorities seized about 860 kilogrammes of fresh vegetables illegally imported from Malaysia during a joint operation on delivery trucks at Tuas Checkpoint on Wednesday.

During the operation, officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) noticed discrepancies in the consignment transported by a truck and referred it to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) for further inspection.

“The SFA discovered undeclared and under-declared vegetables, such as caixin, romaine lettuce, and mint leaves, imported by five importers in the truck. All illegally imported produce were seized,” according to a joint statement by the ICA and SFA on Thursday.

The SFA is conducting further investigations into the matter.

In Singapore, food imports must comply with SFA requirements. Food can only be imported by licensed importers, and each consignment must be declared and accompanied by a valid import permit.

Those found guilty of illegally importing fresh fruits and vegetables may face a fine of up to S$10,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years.
