UNI-MLC Hopes For Effective Implementation Of Minimum Wage Order

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The Union Network International-Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC) hopes the new minimum wage order, which takes effect tomorrow, will be implemented effectively for the benefit of workers.

Its president Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal welcomed the move, expressing hope that its enforcement would be well-coordinated nationwide to support workers earning below RM1,700.

"With the implementation of this minimum wage, workers will at least have better financial stability and be able to plan their lives and household expenses," he said in a statement today.

He also agreed with the Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) that the minimum wage should not be considered a benchmark for entry-level salaries, particularly for graduates.

"Employees should be paid wages that reflect their skills and experience," he added.

KESUMA, in a statement today, announced that the order sets a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with at least five employees, as well as for those engaged in professional activities, regardless of the number of workers employed.

For employers with fewer than five employees, the enforcement will take effect on Aug 1, allowing them ample time to adjust their wage structures and business operations.

The ministry added that this initiative is expected to benefit 4.37 million workers, in line with the MADANI Economy agenda, which prioritises social justice and the well-being of the people while promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
