ANKARA, Feb 2 (Bernama-AA) -- Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani called Sunday on Israel and Hamas to start work on the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.
"We underline the importance of commitment by all parties to implementing all the terms of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and starting the second phase (of negotiations)," he told a joint news conference in Doha with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
"There should be no compromises to engage in the second-phase negotiations," he added.
Sheikh Mohammed said negotiations on the second phase of the Gaza deal were scheduled to start on Monday.
“(But) there are no clear details about the arrival of delegations and the start of negotiations, and we look forward to seeing some movement in the coming days," he added.
The Qatari premier stressed the importance of both sides' commitment to engaging in good faith.
Regarding United States (US) President, Donald Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s firm rejection of any forced displacement.
“We are engaging with the Trump administration and we hope there will be no disagreements,” he said, stressing his country’s commitment to ensuring Palestinians remain in their land.
During an Arab ministerial meeting in Cairo on Saturday, Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar’s strong opposition to any attempts to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza.
On Jan 19, the first six-week phase of the Gaza and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel went into effect, during which negotiations will continue for subsequent phases of the deal.
The agreement is mediated by Egypt and Qatar, with support from the US.
The three-phase ceasefire agreement includes provisions for a prisoner exchange and sustained calm, with the ultimate goal of securing a permanent truce and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
