Sabah's First Pos Shop To Support Smes And Boost Local Economy

KOTA KINABALU, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- The launch of Sabah’s first Pos Shop aims to support local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by offering a platform to showcase their products and generate income, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

The 2,200-square-foot convenience store, operating under the Pos Malaysia brand, is designed to meet customer needs while contributing to the state’s economic development.

While postal services remain vital for sending letters and documents, the Pos Shop, built within post offices, introduces a modern and customer-focused approach, he added.

“This concept transforms the post office into a one-stop centre, combining postal services with everyday shopping needs in a more comfortable and convenient environment,” he explained.

Hajiji said this in his speech at the launch of the first Pos Shop in East Malaysia at the Kota Kinabalu General Post Office, which was delivered by Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.

As of last December, over 80 local SMEs nationwide have benefitted from Pos Shop branches, offering products in three categories, namely ready-to-eat meals, food and beverages as well as non-food items.

The Pos Shop is part of Pos Malaysia’s broader transformation plan, utilising its network of over 600 post offices, including 40 in Sabah, he added.

Hajiji also expressed hope that Pos Malaysia will continue its mission to provide sustainable services, including efforts to reduce carbon footprints and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“Pos Malaysia is going to replace its existing vehicles with electric ones by 2030. In Sabah, 15 electric motorcycles will be introduced this month,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pos Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Charles Brewer highlighted the success of the ‘shop in shop’ concept, with 50 Pos Shops nationwide driving a 35 per cent increase in foot traffic to associated post offices.

"Pos Shop Kota Kinabalu may be our first in East Malaysia, but it certainly won’t be the last. We believe it will revolutionise retail experiences for communities in both Sabah and Sarawak," he said.
