WASHINGTON, Feb 10 (Bernama-dpa) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminium imports into the country, German news agency (dpa) reported on Sunday.
"Any steel coming to the US is going to have them. A 25 per cent tariff," Trump told journalists travelling with him.
When asked whether aluminium imports would also be subject to tariffs, Trump responded, "25 per cent for both."
The president confirmed that further "reciprocal" tariffs would be announced in the coming week, with a formal declaration expected on Tuesday or Wednesday.
"Very simply, if they charge us, we charge them," he told reporters, adding that the tariffs would take effect "almost immediately."
US tariffs of 10 per cent on Chinese goods came into force on Tuesday, while planned 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada have been temporarily suspended for 30 days.
The suspension follows commitments from both countries to enhance border security measures.
Trump, who won the November presidential election after campaigning on a platform of reducing trade deficits, had previously imposed several tariffs during his first term from 2017 to 2021.
