KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- Embracing the spirit of Ramadan, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim does not intend to continue the dispute with Kuala Terengganu Member of Parliament Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim, especially after the latter retracted the defamatory remarks made against him.
The Prime Minister's senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said that forgiving does not at all lower the status of a man, but rather elevates his status as a servant of Allah.
“The practice of fasting must trigger the human conscience to return to the original nature of his existence, including reviving a culture of fresh discourse and rejecting the culture of slandering,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Daily Briefing streamed live on Anwar and PMO Malaysia’s Facebook page today.
He said Ramadan also teaches Muslims not to hurl baseless accusations at other people, as such an act will not only raise doubts about the accused but also return the allegation to the accuser.
“Such bad practices must be stopped and not be turn into a culture, especially among Muslims,” he said.
The defamation suit filed in December 2022 by Anwar against Ahmad Amzad was settled amicably in the Kuala Terengganu High Court yesterday when both parties reached an out-of-court settlement and agreed to issue a public statement.
The suit was filed over Ahmad Amzad’s alleged defamatory statement that Anwar lied when he said he only received a salary of RM1 when he was the Selangor Economic Adviser.
Lawyer Datuk SN Nair, representing Anwar, said both parties agreed to end the dispute after considering the impact of the suit as well as the legal costs that they would incur since many bigger or more important issues needed attention.
