TEHRAN, March 9 (Bernama-IRNA) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says Iran has not received any letter from the United States (US) after President Donald Trump claimed to have sent such a letter to its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iranian News Agency (IRNA) reported.
“It is said that a letter is on its way,” a reporter of the Iranian national TV told Araqchi on Saturday evening.
“We have heard the same, (but) we haven’t got anything yet,” the top diplomat responded.
“It hasn’t arrived yet,” said Araqchi after the reporter repeated his question about whether Iran has the letter or not.
The conversation took place on the sidelines of a meeting in Tehran, during which Ayatollah Khamenei received heads of the three branches of government and other senior civil including military officials, according to IRNA.
On Friday, President Trump claimed that he had sent a letter to Ayatollah Khamenei, asking that negotiations be reopened.
The claim comes amid a campaign of ‘maximum pressure’ which Trump restored against Iran early last month, two weeks after he began his second term.
Trump initially launched that campaign in 2018 when he withdrew the US from a landmark multilateral deal on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Since Trump’s return to the White House on Jan 20 this year, he has spoken of negotiating a new deal with Iran.
