MELAKA, July 2 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government is considering reviving the traditional ronggeng dance, also known as joget lambak, as cultural preservation initiative and a fresh draw for tourists.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the effort would be carried out thoughtfully, ensuring the performances remain in line with Islamic principles while respecting the art form’s historical roots.
“The idea of reviving ronggeng, which originated in Melaka but has been largely forgotten, is appealing. We aim to reintroduce it in a casual and spontaneous style, as long as it does not contravene syarak (Islamic law),” he said.
Speaking with reporters after closing the Bicara Seni Budaya session held in conjunction with the Rentak Bertandak Antarabangsa Melaka cultural programme here today, Ab Rauf also received the programme’s resolution book from Nusantara Performing Arts Research Centre executive director Prof Dr Mohd Anis Md Nor.
He said the state government will work with the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) and other stakeholders to ensure the revival is meaningful and reflective of Malay cultural heritage.
According to Ab Rauf, ronggeng has unique artistic value and can be elevated as a state cultural asset alongside Dondang Sayang.
“The dance also incorporates pantun (traditional Malay rhyming verse), which helps promote and preserve Malay literary and performing arts,” he said.
The resolutions from the forum will be reviewed for inclusion in the state’s cultural policy as part of Melaka’s broader efforts to strengthen traditional arts and public appreciation of cultural heritage.
