KOTA BHARU, July 3 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Public Works Department (JKR) is conducting design work and a feasibility study on suitable slope repair methods at the Bukit Remah Water Treatment Plant in Tanah Merah, which was damaged following heavy rain on Nov 26 last year.
Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub said the incident triggered a 130-metre soil movement and damaged the sheet pile structure at the plant.
“The federal government, through the Finance Ministry, has approved an allocation of RM6.6 million for repair works. Currently, soil investigation, design work and detailed measurement are being implemented to determine the most suitable repair method,” he told reporters after opening Kelantan JKR Asyura Perdana programme here today.
He said other identified damages include ruptured raw and treated water pipes as well as threats to critical structures such as the chlorine room, chemical storage tanks and the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) substation.
“We are aiming to start the project before the monsoon season for the safety of the plant and nearby residents. It is expected to be fully completed by mid-next year,” he added.
In a separate development, Nik Soh said the infrastructure project involving the main road from Kota Bharu to Kuala Krai (KB-KK), which connects to the Central Spine Road (CSR), is progressing smoothly.
“All construction packages from Kota Bharu to Kuala Krai up to Mentara, Pahang have been awarded to contractors. Some projects have only recently started, but work is progressing and is expected to be completed within two years,” he said, adding that in total, the infrastructure project receives over RM2 billion in allocation, making it one of the largest infrastructure projects after Sabah and Sarawak.
“This project also includes the construction and upgrading of various road facilities, including the installation of lighting using solar technology,” he said.
In response to public complaints about the condition of the Sungai Durian bridge in Kuala Krai, he said that the upgrading work will begin once the KB-KK route is completed.
“The existing road will serve as an alternative route once the new alignment is opened. This is part of a long-term plan to ensure Kelantan’s road network is more efficient, safer, and better supports the state’s economic development,” he added.
