PUTRAJAYA, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) will hold engagement sessions with environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to appoint them as strategic partners in the National Circular Economy Council for Solid Waste (NCEC).

Its minister, Nga Kor Ming said the ministry is dedicated to building collaborative networks with NGOs and local communities to enhance the sustainable urban development agenda in line with the Malaysia MADANI vision.

"We want to encourage the involvement of all NGOs, irrespective of background, in efforts to make the country more sustainable and prosperous for a greener future," he said in a statement today.

Nga also announced that the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia (Tzu-Chi) has pledged to mobilise thousands of volunteers for the upcoming Malaysia Cleanup Day on Sept 27, with a strong focus on civic education, community empowerment, and environmental awareness.

This commitment was made following a courtesy visit by a Tzu-Chi delegation led by Tzu-Chi Kuala Lumpur and Selangor deputy chief executive officer to his office today. The meeting aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation in community development, the circular economy, and environmental sustainability.

"KPKT is truly honoured to have Tzu-Chi as a strategic partner for Malaysia Cleanup Day 2025. With their involvement, I am confident that public participation will be wider and more impactful, potentially making history by attracting 100,000 participants in this massive community cleanup campaign," he said.

During the meeting, Nga was also briefed on various community initiatives implemented or planned by Tzu-Chi, including welfare assistance programmes, recycling activities, cleanliness campaigns, and support for vulnerable groups.

Tzu-Chi Malaysia has over 34,000 volunteers nationwide and is actively engaged in community service, humanitarian aid, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

The organisation also operates 810 recycling drop-off points and 218 recycling centres nationwide.

In the past year, Tzu-Chi successfully collected 5.2 million kilograms of recyclable materials, thanks to the contributions of 40,527 volunteers nationwide.
