KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fighter jet crash into a school in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which killed at least 31 people.

“My heart breaks for the people of Bangladesh after learning of the fighter jet crash into a school in Dhaka. Many lives were lost, most of them children. Over a hundred others were injured,” he posted on Facebook.

Anwar also paid tribute to Maherin Chowdhury, a teacher who rushed her students to safety and then courageously went back into the smoke and flames to rescue more.

“Her immense courage will not be forgotten,” he said.

The Prime Minister said he would be writing to Bangladesh’s interim leader and Nobel laureate Prof  Muhammad Yunus to express Malaysia’s solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.

“In this hour of grief, we stand with you. We mourn every life lost and every family devastated,” he said.

On Monday, an F-7 BGI aircraft that was on a routine training mission crashed seconds after takeoff due to a mechanical fault and hit a building of Milestone School and College in Dhaka's Uttara area.

At least 31 deaths were recorded from the crash so far, including the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam, and 25 children, while at least 165 people were injured.
