ESSEN (Jerman), July 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s hope of a bronze medal in archery at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games (WUG) was dashed when the women’s recurve trio lost in the bronze medal decider in Zeche Zollverein here today.
Syaqiera Mashayikh, Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi and Alia Qursyiah Mazlan were outclassed and lost 1-5 to Chinese Huang Yuwei, Liu Yanxiu and Wu Zihan for the bronze, while Japanese trio Nanami Asakuno, Waka Sonoda and Ruka Uehara beating Fong You Jhu, Kuo Tzu Ying and Li Cai Xuan from Taiwan 6-2 for the gold medal.
“This is exposure and experience, even if it’s less good at least we tried our best,” Syaqiera, who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, said when met here.
“We tried our best and know what we need to improve, even though this game we have the target to win but because of the exposure in games like this, we ourselves aren’t ready. It wasn’t impossible (to win) but the chance was slim,” teammate Ariana added.
The Malaysian trio’s semi-final appearance in the WUG is a first ever achievement for the country, as the archery team has always failed to move beyond the quarterfinal stage previously.
