HIKAM Calls On People To Defend Democracy, Support Development Agenda

26/07/2025 12:20 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- The Himpunan Gerakan Islam Malaysia (HIKAM) has called on Muslims and the people to unite in defending the sovereignty of democracy, rejecting political uncertainty, and supporting the country’s development agenda based on the principles of justice, unity and peace that form the foundation of Malaysia MADANI.

In a statement today, the HIKAM secretariat said it takes seriously the latest political developments, which indicate attempts by certain quarters to topple the government through means other than legitimate elections.

“Efforts to destabilise the political landscape will only trigger a crisis of confidence, undermine the economy, and increase the people’s suffering.

“Islam teaches that the welfare of the ummah must be prioritised and that harm (mafsadah) arising from undemocratic power struggles must be rejected,” the statement said.

The secretariat comprises Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (Wadah) secretary-general Azizuddin Ahmad, Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia (IKRAM) secretary-general Mohd Hafiz Abd Hamid, Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) secretary-general Muhammad Aliemran Norasid and Pertubuhan Himpunan Lepasan Institusi Pendidikan Malaysia (HALUAN) secretary-general Mohd Sabbri Md Yudin.

The secretariat also firmly rejected any attempt to bring down the government through backdoor means, illegitimate political pressure or manoeuvres resembling the Sheraton Move 2.0, stating that power transitions should only occur through free and fair elections, in line with the principles of ‘syura’ and the voice of the people.

HIKAM further called on all political parties, including the opposition, to play their check-and-balance role in a responsible manner, and urged all parties to focus on efforts to restore and reform the nation towards building a more prosperous Malaysia.
