Chinese Authorities Ask Nvidia To Clarify Leak Risks Linked To H20 Chips

BEIJING, July 31 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The Cyberspace Administration of China has appealed to US graphics processor manufacturer Nvidia requesting clarification on possible security risks linked to H20 chips, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti citing media reports on Thursday.

In mid-July, Nvidia announced that it had received approval from the US administration to sell its H20 computer chips, used in AI development, to China.

The Chinese Cyberspace Administration summoned Nvidia's representative, demanding clarification on potential risks and submission of relevant documentation, China Central Television reported.

Recently, serious security problems with Nvidia's computing chips have been detected, the broadcaster reported.

On July 15, US President Donald Trump said that the United States was "way ahead" of China in AI and was poised to dominate in every industry. The president added that, in his opinion, the US possessed the "great chips" and "great everything," adding that the US planned to compete with China in a "very friendly fashion."

In January, the US Department of Commerce released a document stating that the US was imposing new export restrictions on advanced AI chips and models to protect national security and prevent these technologies from being used by unfriendly countries. The restrictions were to help prevent hostile states from using AI technologies for weapons development, cyberattacks, or mass surveillance. Beijing criticized the move.
