Sulawesi Sea Talks Guided By Law And History - Anwar

03/08/2025 03:00 PM

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Discussions between Malaysia and Indonesia on issues related to the Sulawesi Sea are being conducted comprehensively based on international law, historical facts and with consideration of Sabah’s consent, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the strong ties between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta must be maintained in efforts to resolve the maritime boundary issue, as Indonesia has long been a friendly and culturally related neighbour.

Anwar also noted that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is a personal friend, which is why he hopes the matter can be discussed in a harmonious and friendly spirit of kinship.

“We must hold discussions based on law, history and with the agreement of the state government (of Sabah), and it must be brought to the State Legislative Assembly. That is the official requirement,” he said during the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day here today.

Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and the latter's deputy, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup.

Anwar said Malaysia had previously resolved several border issues with Indonesia, including matters involving Sarawak, which have since eased the movement of people and goods through border ports.

He said the governments of Sabah and Sarawak must be involved in negotiations to resolve border issues with Indonesia.

“During my recent visit to Indonesia, I was accompanied by Hajiji and Abang Jo (Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) for a meeting with President Prabowo and his cabinet,” he said.

Anwar added that Petronas and Indonesia’s Pertamina are also collaborating in oil exploration involving wells located within the waters of both Malaysia and Indonesia.
