07/08/2025 12:15 AM

SENAI, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- The Johor bureau of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) was announced as the recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award at the 2025 Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Majlis Legasi Media here tonight.

The award was presented in recognition of the news agency’s continued commitment to delivering high-quality reports that highlight UTM’s expertise, achievements, and initiatives to both national and international audiences.

UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim presented the award to Bernama’s Johor bureau chief Hasnah Jusid at the event, which was attended by more than 50 media practitioners, officers from the Ministry of Higher Education and UTM academic staff.

According to Dr Mohd Shafry, the award reflects the strategic relationship between UTM and the media, which has played a key role in expanding access to knowledge and elevating the university’s reputation.

“At UTM, we believe this is the platform for us to share stories and knowledge with the public to further boost the nation’s innovation and economic index,” he said during his officiating speech.

In the same event, Bernama freelance journalist Nur Fatin Mohmad Kadenen, 31, was named the winner of the Best Coverage Award (Social Sciences) under the print and news portal category.

The award was for her article titled ‘Program Bangsa Johor Bahagia (BJB) Diilham Agong, Raja Permaisuri Tingkat Kualiti Hidup Penghuni Rumah Pangsa’ (Initiative by King, Queen of Malaysia improves flat communities’ quality of life), published on mainstream media platforms, which highlighted the university’s contribution to society through high-impact initiatives.

For Nur Fatin, the recognition goes beyond a personal milestone; it symbolises trust in the role of freelance journalists who often work behind the scenes.

“I never expected to be recognised in such a way. Freelancers may not always be in the spotlight, but we strive to ensure the voices of the people are heard and important stories continue to be told,” she said.

The event organised by UTM was held to recognise the media’s role in expanding the dissemination of information and strengthening strategic ties between the university and media organisations.

Also present at the event were Johor Media Club (KMJ) president Fauzi Ishak, KMJ deputy president Raja Jaafar Raja Ali as well as media bureau chiefs.
