KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Delegations from Thailand and Cambodia have arrived at Wisma Perwira of the Malaysian Armed Forces here for an Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting to discuss issues related to their shared border.
Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand's Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit led their respective delegations, which include their respective armed forces chiefs. They arrived at approximately 1.50 pm.
Also present are Malaysia's Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing and the United States’ Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, who are acting as observers.
The meeting is expected to reach a consensus on the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, including the terms of reference (TOR) for monitoring by the interim ASEAN Defence Attaché Observer Team and the ASEAN Defence Attaché Observer Team (AOT).
The meeting, expected to last about an hour, will be followed by a press conference featuring representatives from both countries.
Secretariat-level discussions between the two countries had been held here from Monday until yesterday to prepare for today’s meeting.
Yesterday, Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the secretariat-level discussions had reached an agreement in principle on implementing a ceasefire along the border.
Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement on July 28, following a special meeting held in Malaysia.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Seri Perdana Complex, Putrajaya, and attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours escalated after a deadly clash on May 28 in the disputed Preah Vihear area, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
