BANDAR PERMAISURI, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The remains of Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, who died when hit by a vehicle driven by a criminal during a housebreaking incident at Golf Park in Alor Setar, Kedah, yesterday evening, were laid to rest this morning with full police honours.
Earlier, the remains of the 35-year-old policeman were brought to his parents’ home in Kampung Pak Kancil at then taken to the Petra Jaya Mosque at 9.15 am for funeral prayers before the burial at the mosque’s cemetery at 10.30 am.
Present at the burial ground were Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin and more than 300 family members and friends.
The burial was conducted with full Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) honours, including the ceremonial handing over of the Sang Saka Biru flag by Mohd Khairi to the deceased’s father, Mazlan Umar, 64, a retired police officer.
The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. yesterday when police received a tip-off about suspicious activity at Golf Park. A team of five officers and personnel from the Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (CID), including Mohd Hafizul, responded to the scene in two vehicles. It was during this operation that the officer was fatally struck by a suspect’s vehicle.
Mohd Hafizul Izham sustained serious head and body injuries and died at the scene.
One suspect was arrested at the scene, while the remaining three fled but were later apprehended in Kepala Batas, Alor Setar.
Mohd Hafizul Izham leaves behind a wife, Nur Azhanis Mohd Yusoff, 36, and three sons, Muhammad Akif Naufal, 11; Muhammad Ammar Nazran, 9; and Muhammad Afiq Nazim, 4.
Speaking to reporters, Muhammad Akif Naufal recounted the last moments he shared with his father were when he picked him up from school at 1.15 pm yesterday.
“After that, I took a ride from a friend and his mother to Aman Central (in Alor Setar), where a policeman then came and took me to the hospital.
“I thought it was my father who asked me to go to the hospital to visit a friend, but when I arrived at about 6.30 pm, I saw Mama crying. That’s when I found out it was Papa who died,” he said.
Muhammad Akif Naufal shared that his father often reminded him to stay disciplined, pray, and study hard.
Meanwhile, the late Corporal’s mother, Maznah Ismail, 64, expressed her sorrow over not getting the chance to cook her son’s favourite dish, nasi minyak, just days before his passing.
“The last time I saw him was when he stopped by the house briefly on Saturday night while on duty, travelling from Kedah to Kuala Terengganu.
“On Monday, before heading back to Kedah, he called and asked me to cook because he wanted to stop by for a meal. But I didn’t have time to prepare anything as he was already nearby. He didn’t stop and continued his journey.”
“If I had known, I would’ve cooked the nasi minyak for him...it was his favourite,” she said tearfully.
