KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is placing high hopes on the national junior cycling squad to win medals at the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, from Aug 20 to 24.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim said that although Malaysia have never won a medal in the championship before, he hopes the four young riders representing the country will make history this time.

“We want to see them not only participate, but truly make history and challenge for the podium this time.

“It is important for us to continue producing new talents in cycling at the world level, and we want to develop more (Datuk) Azizulhasni Awangs, Shah Firdauses (Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom) and Fatehah Mustapas,” he told reporters after flagging off participants of the ASEAN Solidarity Ride 2025 at Dataran Batu Buruk here today.

The four cyclists entrusted with the medal hunt are Sawda Hasbullah, Nur Umairah Qhaisara Zulfikha Razak, Luqman Haqim Ali Badrun and Yu Jing Liang.

Sawda previously caused a stir at the Asian Track Cycling Championships (ACC) at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, last February when she won two gold medals and one silver.
